10 questions with Prison Escapee

How did you get into creating music?

I originally got into creating music in college, it was part of my multimedia degree and it wasn’t any good. I was supposed to be putting together simple loops and I instinctively wanted to create something more experimental.

Where do you get your inspirations from ?

I get my inspirations in writing music from my relationship with Jesus, my wife and my family. I write about the things I do as a way to preserve memories.

Use three words to describe your music!

Melancholy. Nostalgia. Emotion.

What’s your favourite song of yours and why?

My favorite song I’ve released so far would have to be “The Art of This” off my latest album, ‘20/20’ because I love the drive of the drums paired with the classical tone. The lyrics are also some of my favorite I’ve written.

Tell us one artist you are listening to right now!

One artist I am currently listening to lately would have to be Radical Face. I have always been a huge fan as he is an influence of mine. He put out a handful of singles this year and a few of them are some of my favorite songs of the year, especially “The River with No Name.”

Who would you like to collaborate with the most?

I would like to collaborate with Stevie Nicks more than any other musician. She is my all time favorite singer and I recently covered “Dreams” by her band, Fleetwood Mac, which is out now on Cleopatra Records.

Where is your favourite place you have ever performed?

My favorite place I have ever performed would have to be a small bar named Justin’s on Lark Street in Albany, NY. It was a narrow, brick lined space with live music nightly and a jazz bar feel. I wish I could go back but it’s been closed for some time now.

Where is the one place you dream of performing?

I dream of performing at Hollywood Bowl because it’s my favorite venue that I’ve been to and I grew up watching The Doors performance there on YouTube. I also was able to see two huge influences of mine perform there, Death Cab for Cutie and Sigur Rós.

What are you most looking forward to in 2021?

Personally I am most excited to be moving next to the ocean in Long Beach, CA with my wife, so we can smell the sea air with our window open. Musically I am most excited to be releasing my 6th full length album through Cleopatra Records. It’s written for my wife and inspired by our marriage.

What are you working on next?

I am currently writing new music for a future release. I wrote 3 new songs yesterday and two of them ended up working nicely, still have a lot to go before I decide if they will cut it though! At this point it usually will take me about a year before a song comes out. Though “Love Beat” from ‘You Only Live Twice’ was written, recorded, and released within 24 hours.
